Blackberry Z3 Review

Blackberry Z3

 Blackberry Z3

Theres no denying the fact that BlackBerry (the company formerly known as Research In Motion) has serious problems. Five years ago, everyone from students to housewives to businessmen was willing to pay a lot of money to own a BlackBerry. Three years ago, Android and the iPhone began to make QWERTY phones feel seriously clunky and old-fashioned. Two years ago, we were hoping that the new BlackBerry 10 platform and devices based on it would reinvigorate the company, but ridiculous pricing and questionable decisions at every level destroyed any chance of that happening.
Ever since the launch of the Z10 a year and a half ago, weve been waiting for lower-priced models that might offer better value for money and wouldnt be completely overshadowed by Android. As it stands, there are very few BlackBerry loyalists left, and the majority of those who have moved on to Android or iOS are not going to give the company another chance without a lot of very good reasons. Lets find out if the new BlackBerry Z3 delivers.

Our Reviews

BlackBerry really does know how to build beautiful phones. The Z3 is ridiculously good looking and its construction quality is impeccable. As of now, its only available in black but we wouldnt be surprised to see a white edition in the future. The front is all smooth glass, and there really isnt much bezel space around the screen itself. The rear is made of a texturised soft-touch plastic with the classic BB logo in the centre. For better or worse, the battery is non-removable. Theres good news and bad news - while the Z3 is brand new and undoubtedly good-looking, its built with mostly utilitarian components. The processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 with integrated Adreno 305 graphics, but theres a generous 1.5GB of RAM to keep things humming along. The screen is a bit of a letdown at 540x960 pixels despite its large size. Theres Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 along with A-GPS, FM radio, an accelerometer and a proximity sensor. Theres only 8GB of internal storage space, but microSD cards of up to 32GB are supported (and 64GB cards might work unofficially). The Z3 is a budget phone and it shouldnt be surprising that its camera isnt anything to get excited about. Still, shots are decent enough when the lighting is good, and you can post them to social networks without any problem. At full size, its obvious that the camera struggles with details and that theres a lot of compression going on. We noticed that the camera had trouble focusing in low light, but the flash is surprisingly powerful. Video is again not spectacular, and the front camera is entirely forgettable. Day-to-day usage was marked by occasional jitters, and there were sometimes momentary pauses on black screens while transitioning from one task to another. Despite looking and feeling like a high-end phone, the Z3 definitely does not deliver a premium experience.

OnePlus One finally gets a pre order system live in October

The past few months have been a pretty mixed bag for OnePlus, the Chinese startup thats behind the One - which it calls a "flagship killer". A series of mishaps, as well as its famous invite system, have led many to hold on purchasing the One. But if you have, you may reconsider starting next month.
See, it looks like the company finally heard the cries of would-be customers across the world, and its set to introduce a new pre-order system "in late October".
Heres how the new system will work. OnePlus will hold limited time sales, during which anyone will be able to place an order for the OnePlus One. So far it sounds like Xiaomis flash sale model. The difference is that OnePlus wont limit the amount of orders that can happen during each window.

Obviously though, the number of readily available Ones will be limited, so those will immediately go out to people who ordered (presumably on a first come, first served basis). When the stock runs out, the remaining orders will be automagically transformed into pre-orders.
If youll be in this situation, the company promises it will give you an approximation of when it expects to ship your order before you go through with the payment authorization (so you can easily back down if it feels like too much of a wait). Also, if you decided to go with the pre-order but change your mind before your handset has shipped, youll be able to cancel easily.
Interestingly though, the invites will stick around. And theyll let you skip the wait. If you receive an invite while youre waiting for a pre-order to ship, you can apply it to skip the pre-order queue and have your One sent to you immediately.
Even more information will be made public about a week before the new system goes live.

2015 Oppo R5 Price Release Date

Oppo R5 Review: Beautiful slim smartphone but poor performance

2015 Oppo R5 Price Release Date-Oppos R5 for sale is a truly ravishing telephone. Clad in metal, its super-thin - only 4.85mm (0.19 inches) profound, and it measures an inadequate 155 grams (5.5 ounces). Its unquestionably noteworthy, yet this takes on at the loss of the 3.5mm sound jack, so youll need to utilize Bluetooth earphones on the off chance that you need to listen to music.

Oppo R5 Price

Oppo R5 Verizon

For Android fans desirous of the iphone 6s thin casing, great, look no further. The Oppo R5 reviews ultra-thin body beats the iphone conveniently, and will draw desirous gazes from other Android holders also.

However slimness isnt all that incredible without the execution to back it up, and this is the place the telephone wavers. Its generally drowsy, and the cam takes everlastingly to fire up. The telephones dainty edge likewise doesnt assist with the hotness and it can get uncomfortably hot now and again.

Evaluating and availablity

Oppo hasnt yet uncovered careful dates for the telephones accessibility, however the Chinese organization plans to offer it comprehensively, either through its online store or working in association with nearby wholesalers. What I do know is that there will be three renditions because of the diverse LTE groups - one for the US, one for China and one for whatever is left of the world.

The telephone is situated to hit Australian shores in right on time 2015. Value savvy, the R5 will be sold at $449, which changes over to generally £310 or Au$560. It will likewise come opened, so youll have the capacity to utilize the telephone on 3g for the most part all over the place.

Plan

The R5 is encased in metal - with a hand-cleaned steel outline and, on the back, brushed aluminum. This gives the telephone a premium vibe that youd anticipate from a more costly gadget.

The two-tone shade plan (either white and silver or white and gold) at the back does attract examinations to Apples iphone plans, yet the state of the telephone is a great deal more precise. In spite of being more slender, it doesnt feel as elusive as the iphone.

One drawback to the dainty edge of the telephone is that the back 13-megapixel stands out, much like Apples iphone. Be that as it may, not at all like the little knock of the iphone 6, the R5s back cam pops out a reasonable way, enough that it makes the telephone uneven when set on a level surface.

The R5 sports a 5.2-inch AMOLED showcase, with a full HD determination of 1,920x1,080 pixels. The screen is splendid and sharp, while colors were energetic. I do have issues with the auto-shine settings of the telephone - it can off and on again be excessively diminish.

Like most Chinese-made cell phones, the R5 sports physical home, menu and back keys. Im not a devotee of physical keys since I feel programming keys are ideal to connect with - you can (contingent upon the OS) switch the back catch to either the left or right position.

The volume and force keys are on the right side, with the micro-USB port at the base. As said prior, theres no 3.5mm sound jack.

Equipment

Oppos R5 is fueled by an octa-center 1.5ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor, and in principle, ought to have enough squeeze to power the telephone. In any case my involvement with the gadget was short of what palatable: now and again the telephone would stop between exchanging applications, for instance. I figure a product upgrade could alter this, and I will redesign the audit in the event that it does.

The telephone packs 2gb of RAM, 16gb of locally available stockpiling and a 2,000mah battery. Theres no microsd card space to extend that stockpiling, which confines the quantity of applications you can introduce and the quantity of tunes and films you can keep installed.

Programming and gimmicks

The telephone is controlled by Android 4.4 Kitkat - not the most recent 5.0 Candy - with Oppos custom Coloros UI on top. The product is all that much enhanced from the organizations first form, however it appears to be comparative. For one, its much compliment.

Oppo has likewise moved the signal board around. As opposed to swiping from the upper left corner to actuate the board, you simply need to swipe up from the base. It takes up just a small amount of the screen now, so you can in any case see what you were doing out of sight. You can rapidly initiate the electric lamp by drawing a "V" with your finger, or turn on the cam with an "O." You can likewise make new motions, for example, a "W" for Whatsapp.

The settings menu is better composed now. Like the Samsung Cosmic system S5, its presently sorted into tabs, which makes it simpler for speedier access. Instant messages additionally pop up in case youre utilizing the telephone, giving you a chance to do a snappy answer without leaving your current application.

In conclusion, in the same way as most Chinese Uis, Coloros gets rid of the application drawer style of Android, however in the event that youre changing from an iphone, youll likely be acquainted with having all your applications on your home screens.

Cam

Oppo has for the most part done well with its telephones cams and the 13-megapixel shooter of the R5 is the same. The main issue I had was the moderate start-up of the cam, which is likely because of the telephones by and large drowsy execution. Other than that, center is really fast and there are a lot of modes, for example, a ultra high-determination mode and beautiful night shots that you can play around with.

Execution

On our standard benchmark tests the telephone scored 16,849 on Quadrant, while performing 507.658 Mflops. This puts it above plan handsets that run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, (for example, the HTC Wish 510), however beneath top of the line gadgets. That is basically normal in most circumstances and affirms my suspicion that the execution issues Ive been having with the telephone so far are likely programming based.

Battery life

The 2,000mah doesnt appear to keep going long enough for everyday utilization - Im ordinarily down to 20 percent before the end of the day, and this is on what I normally view as moderate utilization. On our E-NEWS Labs feature test, which circles a feature at half splendor, the telephone endured 7 hours 24 minutes.

In our tests, we normally leave the volume at half yet directed to a couple of earphones. Nonetheless, since this telephone doesnt have a sound jack, I forgot it to blast through its speakers. While this will influence the battery test sort of, the results do reflect my episodic tests: the telephones battery life is short.

Call quality and speakers

In spite of its slimness, the Oppo R5 Release Date has really noisy speakers. Its sufficiently boisterous to be heard in your pocket. I generally kept the telephones volume at around half, as notice alarms could get irritating.

Call quality was for the most part great - voices came over clear and fresh, however now and again it could be excessively uproarious. Ear piercingly uproarious, truth be told. You can turn this down however, so I dont propose abandoning it on full.

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom Review

Samsung Galaxy K Zoom improves further the idea of the famous Galaxy S4 Zoom which was released on 2013. The smartphone is basically a cut-down of the previous version which is enhanced with Samsung’s digital cameras and optical zoom lens. The K Zoom is apparently much thinner thanS4 Zoom due to its redesigned optical zoom lens that in fact drag off one of the elements of the lens to the other side rather than caving in into the body of the smartphone. The camera unit of this smartphone is obviously the most noticeable element which characterizes metallic-finish, mix of machined and smooth plastics.

If you uncover the case, you’ll discover the 2430mAh battery with microSIM slot beneath it. K Zoom has internal memory of 8GB and you can add an extra microSD if you need extra capacity. The LTE Category 4 enables you to manage download of 150Mbps and uploads 50Mbps which is compatible for mobile network. The phone is equal with the 2012’s Galaxy S3 and it doesn’t feature the 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

The SamsungGalaxy K Zoom has quad-core processor along with dual 1.7GHz and second dual 1.3GHz. The touchscreen is a 1280x720p of AMOLED and it’s probably smaller than the one S5 has. The most outstanding feature of this phone is obviously the 10x optical zoom camera not to mention its 20.7 megapixel resolution. With this kind of camera quality, K Zoom competes with its fellow camera phone like Sony Experia Z Series and the current Nokias. The outcome photos from K Zoom’s camera are indeed great. Despite its small touchscreen, you’ll still be able to tell the difference between the photos from your K Zoom and the ones from other smartphones that you can find today. K Zoom’s camera is the best choice for capturing photos in a dark condition.

If you really need a smartphone with an outstanding quality of camera integrated, then SamsungGalaxy K Zoom is nothing but the best option you can consider. For capturing the moments, it’s as great as what you may expect from a smartphone of its specifications and sizes. The retail price of this phone is around $749. It’s probably a pretty high price, but it would be the best deal if you can find the phone on discount. K Zoom will perfectly appeal you with its powerful and usable device that can defend the remarkable features, size, specs, and price.

PREVIEW Samsung Galaxy Tab 10 5 S – PC

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.5 S is the latest tablet from Samsung, we the big brother of the Galaxy S5 smartphone can call. safely With a crisp display and a golden touch tablet is immediately apparent, but is it really the best that the South Koreans have to offer? We were already using the tablet to work for a preview. A more detailed review will follow next week.

Screen

S Galaxy Tab has a full-HD Super AMOLED display with 2560 x 1600 pixels, which is actually a long way to say that it is a crystal clear screen is where you can get enough of. The sharp display is the first thing you notice when you turn on the power for the brightness of 287 ppi (pixels per inch) almost hurts your eyes, it’s so obvious.

In addition, Samsung has some useful features stopped in the tablet that make the viewing experience even better. The most important of these is the adaptive display, “which the screen colors and tint automatically adjusts to the activity on the screen. If you are a movie intentionally or looking at photos of the screen adapts to that activity, but it is a pity that the self-regulation of these two activities also ceases.

Appearance

tablet looks out of the box neat, and especially the silver edges around the tablet and the home button instantly attract attention. The back has the exact same grid looks like its little brother, the Galaxy S5 smartphone. That makes for a lot less unsightly stains on the back, but once we found the back of the tablet and some cheap plastic feel.

Speakers

Remarkably, the Tab’s two speakers Both sides have to sit, both left and right. This is useful when you are watching a movie and you hold the tablet with one hand. That way you still get sound from the speaker – all we found the sound that the tablet actually produces a little off

Buttons

But what we particularly bothered about the. Galaxy Tab S is the layout of the buttons. The Tab S is intended for use in landscape mode, which can also be seen at the Samsung logo on the long side of the tablet. That also means that the main controls are at the bottom of the long side. In the middle is a physical home button, left them with a touch button to call up the multitasking menu on the left and a touch button allows you to go back one step.

The main problem with the layout emerges if we really are going to use in portrait mode. Tablet as a tablet If you have the device in your left hand to hold and operate with your right, your thumb rests always exactly on the back button . If you long press a menu on the right side of the display screen. So you’re in practice, constantly thinking about how you hold your hand when you use the tablet portet mode.

Lying tablet

All this makes the Tab S above a horizontal tablet, but we find personally but impractical. If we want a device that you are using a keyboard, for example, all we have to choose a laptop. We choose just one tablet thereby browse the Internet and read on the couch Twitter -. Especially actions that you want to use in portet mode

Incidentally, it is a separate option that the left button no menu button , but only a list of recent programs evokes. Samsung wants to thus focus primarily on the multitasking feature of the tablet, which is also reflected in various software tweaks.

Battery

We have the battery life of the device is not yet to test, because we Tab S only yesterday were in for testing, but our first impressions are all positive. fully An evening of browsing and working with the screen at high brightness caused little battery loss. Samsung says himself that the 7,900 mAh battery has a maximum length of up to 9 hours.

Software

Tab S runs on Google’s latest operating system, Android 4.4.2. You find good because the machine rotates very quickly – though we noticed after installing a few apps clear what was when we wanted to switch between applications

Also. immediately notice that there is a lot less stock apps on the tablet stand. Unlike Samsung Galaxy phones, this tablet is not cluttered with unnecessary junk that people in many cases are waiting. Obviously, we can expect the Play apps (Books, Music, Games, etc.), and in addition to a standard mail app must also necessarily Google Gmail app – but that luxury is found in every Android device back. A number of apps we saw not, the utility and we had quite less applications as Side Sync and WatchoOn want to see. Moreover, Samsung installs a number of its own apps, including Samsung Apps (app-ception!) and Samsung Go on the tablet, which we find unnecessary. But, especially if you compare it with the infinite load stock apps that the Galaxy smartphones is, you can use the Tab S certainly not complaining.

Widgets

It is not only apps that Samsung installs by default, but also quite a few screen widgets, such as a calendar, your email, or customize news feed. These fall under the category of useful, but we had been able to do without. All we have to mention that this is the personal preference of the author.

Multitasking

The operating system is packed with useful tools that allow multitasking. If you press and hold the back button long or if you swipe from the right side of the screen, a menu that allows you to open up. Most used apps quickly appears That appear next to each other on the screen, so you can multitask easily. Unfortunately it also makes the tablet slowly.

In addition, clicking anywhere that you can take a picture quick little circle on to your gallery or your email, and you can easily control your music there. The only bad thing is that round about all apps back state, and sometimes in places where “he’ll sit very annoying – as is the button instance Evernote exactly on the search button to go

Lag

The 1.9 GHz quad-core processor is a device in this price range is actually a bit disappointing – we expected something stronger. Especially with the fast switching between different apps you notice a definite lag, and also switch between different home screens sometimes feels slow and heavy. We suspect that this will only get worse if you move even more apps, because in our one evening with the device we can install., Only a limited number of applications

Conclusion

With the Galaxy S Tab 10.5 Samsung has once again delivered a wonderful tablet, notably the display attracts attention. The Full HD AMOLED screen is crisp and makes the tablet ideal for devouring movies through Netflix. The Tab S is the perfect multimedia tablet, but some work is concerned somewhat disappointing. Pretty soon you notice lag when you switch between multiple applications and multi-task features make the tablet a bit slow. Moreover, the Tab S built specifically for use in landscape mode, while we also want to use the device. Portet as tablet But if you tablet primarily for watching movies and series, then you’re using the Tab S very well.

Next week takes a comprehensive review site, when we have more with the tablet can work. The above is only a first impression after an evening with the Tab S. Maybe we’ll see something about the head and look at it wrong, but next week you get to read all the ins and outs of this device

Samsung Galaxy K officially zoom 20 7 megapixel camera with 10x optical zoom – Android World

recent weeks already leaked some things about the “next Samsung Galaxy” and we have also seen the announcement of the “Kapture Moment’ the event. Samsung has just launched its next Galaxy device: Samsung Galaxy K zoom, the photographers brother of the Galaxy S5.

Event

Yesterday we wrote that Samsung is the location of the ‘Kapture Moment’ the event had been drained. Officially, of course, we did not have to any device it would go, but the word “Kapture” (variation on capture) and the habit of Samsung to bring after the launch of the flagship variations on this unit told enough.

Galaxy K zoom

Samsung Galaxy K zoom

Samsung wants to make a phone for every conceivable moment or situation and that is the Samsung Galaxy K zoom is also the case. This new model of Samsung should prove useful in situations where the ‘normal’ camera of the phone is no longer adequate, but you also want to take again. No big SLR cameras

The Samsung Galaxy K zoom is a variation on the Samsung Galaxy S5 and also features some of his qualities. Thus, this device also has a special mode to conserve battery power, and you can also use S Health and edit photos and videos with the Studio app. But to get the title “zoom” the camera has been part of this unit have grown considerably. The 13 megapixel camera is removed and replaced with a retractable lens that has 10x optical zoom. This optical zoom lets you get close to distant objects and still sharp shooting.

 Samsung Galaxy K zoom

This photograph is by means of a 20.7 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor to deliver clear and detailed images. Samsung Galaxy K zoom also features optical image stabilization (OIS) so you have less trouble with moving pictures.

According to Samsung, photographing or filming this unit very well in low light. In a situation that calls for extra light, you use the Xenon flash, the light from the flash is brighter than the light from LEDs so the images shot better come into their own.

camera

In addition, the Samsung Galaxy K zoom camera equipped with features that provide the right balance between light and brightness (Auto Focus / Auto Exposure Separation) and 5 optimized filter settings (Pro Suggest ). Very important: you have the ability to create (Selfie Alarm), simply perfectly timed selfies there is also Object Tracking, which lets you create clear and focused photos of moving subjects. All functions are accessed through the user interface on the device.

Successor Galaxy S4 Zoom

The Samsung Galaxy K Zoom is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom. Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy K zoom has become even bigger: the device measures 13.75 by 7.08 inches, compared to 12.55 by 6.35 inches of the Galaxy S4 zoom. This has to do with the larger screen, the Galaxy K zoom has a 4.8-inch 720p screen, this was a qHD screen with a size of 4.3 inches. It is the successor slightly thicker at its thinnest point: 1.66 inches to 1.54 inches. However, the unit has 8 grams lighter, but it still weighs 200 grams.

As for other specs does the K zoom it a lot better. The dual-core chipset has been replaced by a hexa-core chipset, the memory is 1.5 GB to 2 GB and increase the screen resolution as we have indicated above above. The hexa-core chipset we’ve seen in the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo. This chipset has a quad-core processor with a clock speed of 1.3 GHz and a dual-core chipset with a clock speed of 1.7 GHz. With these processors, the phone should offer. (In conjunction with the 2430 mAh battery) a good combination of speed and battery life

Availability

The new Galaxy K Zoom is on sale from May 21 and is available in the following colors Charcoal Black, Electric Blue and Shimmery White. The suggested retail price is € 499.

Hands On Galaxy S5 Review

Once a year, Samsung takes some of its best material and slaps it together into a premium flagship model called the Galaxy S. While 2014s version -- the S5 -- came a bit earlier in the year than some earlier iterations, were no less excited to see it become the star of the show at Mobile World Congress. The new device will ship in April (on stage, Samsung specifically mentioned that it launches on April 11th in 150 markets), although exact pricing and availability are still unknown. It features a refreshed design language, yet anyone who has used a GS phone recently will immediately recognize it as a Samsung flagship.

Galaxy S5
Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S5
Despite its familiar design, the GS5 has a few new useful hardware features, including a fingerprint scanner, heart rate sensor, and a toned-down TouchWiz UI on top of Android 4.4 KitKat. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all, however, was that Samsung didnt overload its prized new smartphone with a heaping dose of new S-branded features. This is a marked departure from the companys previous strategy of cramming in every software feature under the sun, which leads us to wonder if this is related to Samsungs recent agreement to dial back the customization it does on Android devices. So what else is new here? Read on for a deeper dive.
Galaxy S5 Technecore Kitkat
Galaxy S5

The new Galaxy retains the same 1080p Super AMOLED panel as the GS4; its just slightly larger, at 5.1 inches. With this in mind, it shouldnt come as a surprise that the viewing experience is pretty much the same as its predecessor. Additionally, the GS5 comes with a swappable back cover, microSD slot and removable 2,800mAh battery, which has a higher capacity than last years model. Its also IP67-certified, which adds an element of water and dust resistance never before enjoyed by Galaxy S users (unless you count the GS4 Active, that is). As a result, the micro-USB 3.0 port at the bottom is protected by a tab that keeps water from getting inside.
Samsung says the back of the GS5 is "leather-like," which basically means its a fancy-looking polycarbonate build. While the company already uses similar design language for the Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014 edition, the look and feel is slightly different; its not quite as soft as the new Notes, and its small dimples actually remind us of the original Nexus 7. Though the sides have a metallic finish, company reps confirmed theyre actually made from a blend of polycarbonate and glass fiber. Still, were more confident of the durability here than we were with many of Samsungs previous Galaxy phones.

The One of the biggest talking points for the GS5 is that new fingerprint scanner. Its easy to see this as a response to Apples Touch ID implementation in the iPhone 5s, and while its hard to say if that was the primary motivation for the new feature, Apples not the only manufacturer to have integrated a fingerprint scanner, and were sure it wont be the last. In this case, Samsungs scanner, which works by swiping your finger down over the home button, has a few handy use cases. In addition to the obligatory phone unlock option, it also lets you fingerprint-protect a private data locker on your phone, in case you have confidential information you dont want getting out there. Samsung also announced a partnership with PayPal which allows you to make online payments using the fingerprint method. In our limited time with the GS5, I noticed that the phone picked up my fingerprint most of the time, as long as I did it slowly enough -- if youre in a swiping hurry, your chance of success will likely drop. Unfortunately, were still waiting to hear back on exactly how Samsung will implement security and privacy concerns with the scanner, so well update you as soon as we know more details.

Fingerprint scanner in Galaxy S5 Technecore
FingerPrint Scanner in Galaxy S5

The other major new hardware feature is the heart rate sensor, which is built into the same rear module as the LED flash. It works in conjunction with S-Health 3.0, which acts as a personal life coach of sorts. To monitor your pulse, hold your finger up to the sensor and leave it there while the phone does the rest of the work. As you continue to do this more often, S-Health remembers your history and even goes through the effort of graphing it and offering up other relevant information. It also acts as a pedometer and food monitor. Samsung plans to offer an open SDK for developers to incorporate the tech into their own apps.
Of course, Samsung also put some emphasis on the camera as well. In this case, the GS5 comes with a 16-megapixel sensor that features UHD recording capability and real-time HDR (both photos and video) and a couple new modes that were excited to review. Oh, and of course theres Selective Focus, which allows you to alter the focus of the shot after its taken.
This looks like its going to be big news in smartphones this year, but it looks a lot like a gimmick to me if the S5 is anything to go by, which is a shame when its such a tough task for the phone to process.
First, Samsung is introducing a selective focus feature thats much like Nokias Refocus Lens, in which you can change the depth of field on an image after its taken. Additionally, it also has "Shot & More," which is essentially your standard suite of best photo, eraser and drama; the GS4 had the ability to do these modes, but the difficulty was in the fact that you had to know exactly which mode you wanted to use before taking the shot, whereas now youll be able to sort those details out after the shot is taken so youre not wasting extra time. Lastly, theres also a 2.0-megapixel camera on the front.

The design philosophy behind this version of the Galaxy S involves a modern, glam look, and it even shows in the user interface. Its still very much a TouchWiz device, but it has a much different appearance than previous versions. It seems to be less in-your-face (again, a likely consequence of Googles intervention) with fewer tabs and menus. My Magazine is still around, but its now accessible by swiping from left to right, not down to up.
The rest of the phones stats wont come as any shock. The GS5 offers a top-of-the-line 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800 processor with 2GB of RAM, an IR remote, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 BLE/ANT+, Cat 4 LTE (up to 150Mbps down/50Mbps up) and your choice of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage; oddly, 64GB doesnt appear to be an option, though you can add up to 128GB via a microSD card if needed. All told, its very much a run-of-the-mill Galaxy S flagship, but there are enough new hardware features and software tweaks to make it feel fresh.

iOS 8 users to get early access to apps through Apple’s TestFlight

Apple has made it easier for iOS users to take forthcoming apps for a spin by launching its TestFlight Beta program for app developers.

Apple TestFlight

The new initiative, explained on Apples Developer portal, allows devs to send up to 1,000 copes of new their wares to beta testers, via email invitations sent through iTunes Connect.

Once iPhone and iPad users on iOS 8 have received an invitation they’ll be asked to download the free TestFlight app from the app store, where they’ll be able to install the betas.

TestFlight, an existing beta testing tool which Apple snapped up last year, will inform the iOS user whenever a new version is available and will offer developer instructions on new focus points. The idea is for beta testers to offer feedback, suggestions for new improvements and pick out bugs.

Developers must still submit the app for beta review and it must comply with the full App Store review guidelines before testers can get in on the act.

TestFlight enables Apple’s developers to have the same experience they in turn offer to developers with their Mac OS X and iOS beta programs.

The result should enable developers to have easier access to their potential user base, which should lead to more complete apps hitting the App Store when the time is right.

And, best of all, interested parties have the opportunity to get their paws on new and unreleased apps first.

Xolo 8X 1000 Review A Fresh New Face

We have reviewed a number of Xolo smartphones in the recent past and have been quite impressed. The company is clearly trying to break away from the general perception that Indian brands only sell cheap, low-quality products that can be dumped into the market with zero actual effort. Of course Xolo phones are manufactured in China just like all others are, but you can generally expect better looks, build quality and hardware than youd get from other brands.
Xolo has taken the next step in its journey of differentiation by developing its ownAndroid software overlay. All the major Android players, from global giants Samsung,Sony and LG to Chinese upstarts Lenovo, Gionee, Oppo and Xiaomi have their own custom Android skins, and now Xolo has decided its time to join the club.
xolo_8x-1000_bottomfront2_ndtv.jpg
In a sea of affordable Android phones with nearly identical specifications (and quite a few recycled design ideas), software is the only way to stand apart and do something unique. If Xolo can manage to come up with something really good, it might help attract and retain customers. On the other hand, companies do tend to go overboard with the razzle-dazzle, making us wish they had just stuck to stock Android. Were looking forward to seeing whether Xolo has managed to balance features, improvements and bloat.
Software aside, the Xolo 8X-1000 is also a pretty interesting device, and were going to give it the full review treatment.
xolo_8x-1000_rear_ndtv.jpg
Look and feel
At first glance, the 8X-1000 looks like a solid black slab with almost no markings of any kind. You wont see anything on the front face, but youll just about be able to make out where the front camera, sensors and earpiece are. It would be very easy to pick this phone up and try to use it upside down. Theres a shiny silver Xolo logo on the rear and silver accents around the camera lens, flash, headset socket and Micro-USB port - thats it for design flourishes.

The front and rear are shiny, reflective and immensely easy to smudge up with fingerprints. Xolo says the device is protected by Asahi Dragontrail glass over the screen as well as Gorilla Glass 3, presumably on the rear. There top, bottom and sides are a simple matte black, with a slight bevel wrapping around the rear. The 8X-1000 doesnt open out, which means the battery is not accessible.
xolo_8x-1000_top_ndtv.jpg
Theres one tray on the right edge for a microSD card, and another on the left for the two Micro-SIM cards. The power and volume buttons are also on the right edge, but theyre all too low to be reached comfortably with a thumb.
The 8X-1000 is meant to look stealthy and minimalistic, but it almost feels as a bit too cold and severe. Its very well built and feels quite solid; its just not the kind of design that everyone will automatically love.
xolo_8x-1000_buttons_ndtv.jpg
Specifications and software
The Xolo 8X-1000 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6592M processor running at 1.4GHz with integrated Mali-450 MP4 graphics. Theres 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage space. The 5-inch screen has a decent resolution of 720x1280. Theres an 8-megapixel camera on the rear and a 2-megapixel one in front. Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi b/g/n are supported, along with the usual proximity sensor, ambient light sensor and accelerometer.

The phone runs Android 4.4, but Xolos Hive UI is a massive departure from stock Android. Most things are in their usual places, but they look completely new. The style is very modern and fresh, which we have to credit Xolo for. However, not all the changes are positive.
xolo_8x-1000_slot_ndtv.jpg
The lockscreen is the perfect example of this. Youll see four bars across the screen and four icons at the bottom. You can drag any of the bars downwards to unlock the phone and jump to a particular feature: the bottom one just takes you to the homescreen, while the others are for the phone, messaging and camera apps respectively. The icons at the bottom show you how many missed calls, unread messages, emails and appointments you have. It looks great, but the bars are a bit too narrow, and you have to pay a little more attention than usual to make youre swiping in the right place.
The homescreens also look great, and everything from the colour scheme to the wallpaper and font is slick and modern. Theres a bit of unnecessary animation which adds 2-3 seconds of lag to unlock transition. This is also where we get our first look at Xolos software efforts - there are four hexagonal icons labelled Edge, Secure, Power and Connect. Icon styles arent really consistent and youll notice a mix of hexagons and squared-off circles in various styles everywhere in the Hive UI.
xolo_8x-1000_home_ndtv.jpg
The apps themselves are interesting. Edge is a store for themes, ringtones and wallpapers, but with a social twist. You have to register for a "Hive Key" account, which can be done with one-tap Facebook or Google authentication. Your votes and comments on the stores contents are then displayed in a stream and on content pages for all other users to see. Theres quite a diversity of tastes and styles, including some slick modern themes. Everything seems to be free, which might change in the future.
Edge ties in to Conncect, which is another social app designed to let you communicate with the Xolo team regarding support issues and feature suggestions. Conceptually, it reminds us a lot of Dells ongoing Idea Storm initiative. You can vote on ideas and see which ones have been accepted by the team. The app also includes detailed contact information for Xolo customer support and a list of service centres (with map links). In its current state, the comment stream is full of complaints, spam and unintelligible gibberish. There appears to be little moderation or guidance to help new users, but we do have to commend Xolo for trying this.
xolo_8x-1000_menu_ndtv.jpg
Xolo Secure is an anti-theft solution that lets you track a lost or stolen phone, lock or wipe it out remotely, and back up your contacts and messages. Xolo Power lets you enable a power-saving mode or selectively restrict background data transfers, check out how much time you have left to get various things done, and see which apps are consuming the most power.
Theres a lot more to be seen. Xolo has totally overhauled the quick settings tab of the notifications shade - youll see two prominent circular dials for the screen brightness and timeout settings, plus regular icons for the usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and more. The app launcher is totally new, but a bit confusing. You can sort icons alphabetically, by usage frequency, or in categories. Theres no custom order, which is odd. You cant reorder icons in any of the views so that your favourites are more easily accessible - youll have to set up homescreens for that. There are a few neat widgets, such as a dashboard for Xolo Power, though styles still tend to clash.
xolo_8x-1000_apps_ndtv.jpg
The phone, messaging, contacts and other apps are significantly overhauled. The contacts app deserves special mention for presenting each entry like a social network profile page with a large cover photo and links to messages and a history of interactions. Facebook and Google connections let you sync contacts with those services too.
The camera, gallery and music player apps are brand new and even the Android browser has been reskinned. The custom apps are designed well for the most part, but not all the changes are major improvements over the stock apps. The gallery app is easy to scroll through, and images are sorted neatly into folders. You get basic filter, frame, crop and correction tools but also a few neat features such Photoshop-style RGB curve adjustment. Another neat feature is that you can tweak brightness, saturation and contrast in selective parts of a photo, to adjust over- or underexposed areas.
xolo_8x-1000_gallery_ndtv.jpg
The music app is called FusionX and relies on the same circular control metaphor, but in this case its just extra-fiddly for no reason. You can create playlists and adjust the EQ, which are nice feature to have. FM radio is part of the app, and theres a section called Charts that lists a few current and old Hindi movie tracks which you can stream with a tap. YouTube and Last.fm are also integrated so you can see related videos and recommendations, which are not always relevant.
One more thing to note is that the 8X-1000 does not use on-screen buttons. The space beneath the screen looks blank but there are three capacitive buttons here, denoted by tiny dots that light up only when you touch that area. This lack of labelling is very problematic - youll only learn by trial and error that the Back button is on the right, and the button on the left is for the old-style Android menu, not recent apps. The buttons are difficult to find and use, which is an extremely basic thing to get wrong.
xolo_8x-1000_misc_ndtv.jpg
Camera
We were very pleased with the performance of the 8-megapixel camera. It uses an Exmor-R sensor with a fixed f/2.0 aperture. Xolo advertises a five-stage lens for better quality. We were surprised by how bright and clear images were in daylight, regardless of cloud cover. Low-light performance was also quite good. Images actually look a lot better on a big screen than they do on the phone itself.

xolo_8X-1000_camsample_ndtv.jpg
The camera did not always autofocus on the areas we expected, but this can be fixed very easily. Photos came out sharp, detailed and mostly accurate in terms of colours, without too much compression. The front camera isnt half as good, but is acceptable for video chats and a few odd selfies now and then.
The camera app provides loads of options, but most are buried inside a menu. You only get quick access to the flash, modes and effects settings. Theres a Pro mode that gives you control over white balance, ISO and exposure level. The rest of the options include voice triggering, face detection, burst, a self timer, electronic stabilisation, and image or video quality.
xolo_8x-1000_slot2_ndtv.jpg
Performance
Eight CPU cores might sound like a lot, but we already know that MediaTeks popular MT6592 doesnt always match up to quad-core offerings from more established rivals such as Qualcomm. This time, Xolo has gone with the low-power MT6592M, which is a bit slower.

The 8X-1000 did adequately well in our benchmark tests, but definitely wont be setting any performance records. Scores were notably lower than those of other devices based on the MT6592. We logged 26,278 points in AnTuTu 5 and 11,055 overall in Quadrant. The 13.9fps score in GFXbench is reasonable, and youll be able to play casual 3D games without much trouble. We did notice significant tearing in our high-bitrate 1080p video test, but other 1080p videos played well. The upper half of the phones rear got uncomfortably hot when we did anything even a little stressful with it.
There are two grilles on the phones bottom which look like stereo speakers, but only one is actually a speaker. Its pretty loud and surprisingly clear, though sound is still very thin and high-pitched. It works much better for voices in videos than for complex music.
We were especially disappointed by the battery life - the Xolo 8X-1000 lasted only 4 hours, 9 minutes in our video loop test. We wouldnt expect this phone to last even a full day if youre doing anything more basic than making calls and surfing the Web.
xolo_8x-1000_box_ndtv.jpg
Verdict
Its clear that a lot of effort and even some original thought has gone into the Hive UI. Considering this is the companys first release, its very polished and no major features are missing. We hope to see regular updates that improve usability and flexibility. A few months from now users might prefer stock Android L to any custom skin, so it will be interesting to see how Xolo evolves the Hive UI from here.

The 8X-1000 seems to be targeted at style-conscious users who like to stand out and are more concerned with features than performance. There are of course things about it wed like to change, but again, its a sign that the company is moving in a good direction. Weve said before that Xolo stands out from the crowd of Indian smartphone brands, and now with this new combination of hardware and software, its almost ready to leave them all behind in the dust.
This is not the phone to buy if youre concerned about battery life or raw performance, but it does come across as a viable alternative to similarly priced models from Gionee, Oppo, Lenovo and other value-oriented brands.
